FCT-IRS Unveils New Digital Portal to Streamline Tax Compliance for MDAs

ABUJA, NIGERIA— The Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) has commenced intensive engagements with federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to introduce its newly developed digital tax platform aimed at simplifying tax administration and compliance.

Speaking at a stakeholder forum on Tuesday in Abuja, FCT-IRS Executive Chairman Michael Ango explained that the self-service portal was designed to allow taxpayers to manage their obligations entirely online, eliminating the need to physically visit tax offices. Through the secure portal, users can independently handle registration, tax computation, returns filing, payments, receipt generation, and the acquisition of Tax Clearance Certificates (TCC). The customized platform was built in-house with technical support from the Nigeria Revenue Service.

Alignment with the New 2025 Tax Regime

The sensitization session served to align government stakeholders with the provisions of the Nigerian Tax Act and the recently enacted Nigerian Tax Administration Act 2025.

Fatima Abubakar, the Tax Controller of the MDA Tax Office, clarified that under the updated legal framework, every taxable individual, corporate entity, and government agency must obtain a Tax Identification Number (TIN).

Furthermore, individuals are legally required to declare income from all lawful streams, including property rentals, freelance contracts, investments, and side businesses. She emphasized that the standard remittance of Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) by employers does not exempt employees from filing annual tax returns if they earn additional revenue outside their primary salaries.

FCT-IRS Director of Tax Operations, Salome Adeyemi, added that the overarching goal of the new Nigerian Tax Act is to eliminate double taxation, safeguard low-income earners, and block revenue leakages through digital transparency.

Institutional Support and Stakeholder Trust

The initiative received strong backing from other public sectors. Henry Nwauba, Executive Secretary of the National Assembly Library Trust Fund—which hosted the event—emphasized that absolute data alignment and mutual accountability between tax authorities and state institutions are vital for successful fiscal policy implementation. He commended the FCT-IRS for prioritizing transparent communication over punitive enforcement.

Similarly, Mohammed Ali, representing the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, noted that the digitized approach openly demonstrates transparency, which will significantly bolster stakeholder confidence in the nation’s tax administration system.
