Governor Bago Imposes Curfew in Minna Amid Surge in Killings, Vows Crackdown on Criminals

In response to a surge in violent incidents, including recent killings in Benue and Plateau states, Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Minna, the state capital. This decisive measure aims to curb a rising wave of criminal activities, particularly those involving motorcycles (commonly known as Okada) and tricycles (Keke NAPEP), which have been identified as the primary modes of transport used by perpetrators of violence.

Governor Bago made the announcement during a high-level security meeting held at the Government House in Minna, which was attended by traditional rulers and heads of various security agencies. He emphasized the seriousness of the security threat and pledged to personally lead operations targeting criminal hideouts throughout the city. According to the governor, the violence has reached unacceptable levels, with incidents such as random stabbings causing fear and instability among residents.

While declaring the curfew, Bago made it clear that it may be extended to other local government areas if necessary. Medical emergency workers, however, are exempted from the curfew restrictions to ensure healthcare services are not disrupted. The governor stressed the need for collaboration between the government, security agencies, and community leaders to tackle the crisis effectively.

He warned traditional and community heads to properly document and monitor individuals residing in their domains, stating that any property found to be sheltering criminals or used for drug-related activities would be demolished. This aligns with his administration’s tough stance on insecurity and criminality.

The governor’s decision coincided with renewed calls from the Nigerian Bar Association in Plateau State for the Federal Government to allow states to establish their own police forces. Additionally, Social Democratic Party presidential candidate Prince Adewole Adebayo criticized President Bola Tinubu for what he described as a lackluster approach to national security issues.

Governor Bago concluded by urging parents to take responsibility for their children’s actions and warned that anyone found engaging in violent acts would face the full force of the law. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to maintaining law and order, underscoring a zero-tolerance policy toward thuggery and hooliganism.
