Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has issued a directive to security agencies to conduct systematic raids on locations where vendors of hard and illicit drugs operate in Sagamu and its surrounding areas. The governor expressed his concerns about the rise in cultism and attributed it to the influence of drugs. He made this announcement during a courtesy visit by the new State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr. David Idowu Ojelabi, and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Commandant, Mrs. Ibiba Jane Odili.
Governor Abiodun personally visited a location where drugs were being freely sold in the evenings and urged the security agencies to take immediate action. He emphasized the importance of eliminating drug peddlers and users in Sagamu to restore peace and confidence in the community. The governor asserted that cultism is a significant challenge and that his administration is fully committed to addressing it. He vowed not to allow hoodlums to disrupt the peace and stability of Ogun State and assured that all necessary measures would be taken to combat the menace.
The governor praised the security chiefs posted to the state since his assumption of office, highlighting their collaboration with the state government and other security agencies in tackling security challenges. He specifically urged the NSCDC to work closely with the police to eliminate miscreants on the highways. Furthermore, Governor Abiodun announced plans to launch drones to enhance surveillance and track down criminals hiding along the highways.
Governor Abiodun charged the new security chiefs to bring their wealth of experience to bear and continue the good work of their predecessors. He stressed the importance of effective policing to ensure that citizens can carry out their legitimate activities without fear of attacks.
Commandant Ojelabi of the NSCDC expressed his commitment to working with the governor and other security chiefs to create a crime-free society. He appealed to the state government for support in achieving his objectives.
Commandant Odili of the NDLEA commended the state government for its developmental efforts over the past four years. She emphasized that the use of illicit drugs has contributed to various health-related problems faced by Nigerians. She pledged to continue the work of her predecessor in ridding the state of illicit drugs.
Governor Abiodun’s directive to conduct raids on drug vendors in Sagamu and its environs reflects the government’s determination to tackle cultism and related crimes. The collaboration between security agencies and the state government has yielded positive results in addressing security challenges in Ogun State. With the governor’s focus on effective policing and the deployment of drones for surveillance, it is expected that the security situation will improve, ensuring a safer environment for all residents. The commitment of the new security chiefs, coupled with the support of the state government, will play a crucial role in achieving these objectives.
