The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, is currently in Seoul, South Korea, alongside senior commission officials to observe local government elections as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
According to INEC’s Daily Bulletin released on Saturday, Prof. Amupitan is on the trip with National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu; the Chief Technical Adviser to the Chairman, Prof. Dimis Mai-Lafia; and the Director of Training, Dr. Binta Kasim Mohammed.
The delegation participated in the opening ceremony of the International Election Observation Programme (IEOP), organised by South Korea’s National Election Commission (NEC), which coincides with the country’s nationwide simultaneous local elections taking place from May 29 to June 5, 2026.
The event, held in Seoul, brought together election management bodies, global experts, and international observers from different countries.
The INEC team also visited a polling unit in Mia-dong, Gangbuk-gu, where they observed live voting activities and examined South Korea’s electoral procedures firsthand.
INEC stated that the visit is aimed at exposing its officials to global best practices and emerging trends in election management and observation, as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 polls.
