The Managing Partner, Prime Summit Attorneys, Wuse, Abuja, and legal practitioner, *Dr. Obiajulu Uja*, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to improve its conduct of elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Dr. Uja made the call during an appearance on Beyond the Headlines on Freedom Square TV, hosted by Uchenna Cyril Anioke Ph.D.

He said the credibility of Nigeria’s elections was closely tied to the ability of INEC to accurately record and announce the results of votes cast by citizens.

According to him, although INEC is constitutionally established as an independent federal government agency, questions remain about how independent it is in practice.

He said the electoral commission had, over the years, had people of different professional backgrounds, including retired judicial officers and academics, appointed to lead it.

However, he argued that the institution must do more to restore public confidence in the electoral process.

Uja said Nigerians were increasingly frustrated by situations where voters believed that the results announced did not reflect what happened at polling units.

He recalled that the outcome of the 2023 presidential election generated controversy, although the courts ultimately upheld the result.

The lawyer said INEC should learn from previous controversies and ensure that the 2027 elections were conducted in a manner that would reduce disputes and restore confidence.

“My take is that INEC should wake up in 2027,” he said, urging the commission to perform its duties in line with the Constitution.

He also advocated effective electronic transmission of election results, arguing that reducing opportunities for manipulation during collation would strengthen the electoral process.
