LASTMA Slams Wrong-Way Ambulance Over Ikorodu Road Crash

——– Says reckless maneuvers by ambulance drivers endanger the very lives they aim to save.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has condemned the actions of a private ambulance driver who drove against traffic and caused a serious accident on the Odo Iya-Alaro Bridge inward Maryland on Monday morning.

The incident occurred amid heavy traffic along the Ikorodu Road corridor, triggered by an earlier truck fire that left motorists stranded for hours. In an attempt to bypass the gridlock, a private ambulance with registration number BED 508 EA reportedly transporting a pregnant woman on oxygen speed against traffic.

The vehicle collided with a delivery motorcyclist lawfully navigating his lane, leaving him with a severe knee injury.

LASTMA officers immediately contacted the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), which deployed two ambulances to the scene. The pregnant woman and her life-support equipment were safely transferred into one ambulance, while the injured motorcyclist was rushed to a nearby hospital in another.

The private ambulance driver was arrested and handed over to the Ogudu Police Division for further investigation and possible prosecution. Officials also moved the vehicles involved in the crash to aid traffic flow.

LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep concern over the incident, stressing the agency’s zero-tolerance policy on driving against traffic, even for emergency vehicles.

Bakare-Oki wished both injured individuals a speedy recovery and reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to maintaining safety and order across Lagos traffic corridors.
