Many Feared Dead as Gunmen Launch Deadly Attacks on Imo Villages

….Over 14 Reportedly Killed in Arondizuogu Night Raid.

Imo State, Nigeria Friday, July 25, 2025

Panic and grief have gripped parts of Imo State as gunmen launched a deadly attack on three villages in Arondizuogu community, Ideato North Local Government Area, leaving many residents feared dead.

The coordinated assault, which occurred between late Thursday night and the early hours of Friday, targeted Ndi-Ejezie, Umualaoma, and Ndiakuwata Uno villages. Residents say the assailants stormed the communities on multiple motorcycles and began shooting indiscriminately.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) under the condition of anonymity revealed that the attackers killed no fewer than 14 people across various locations in the community. Many others were said to have sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving treatment in nearby health facilities.

“It was like a war zone,” one local said. “They came in around midnight, riding motorcycles in groups, and just started shooting at anyone they saw. We ran into the bushes and couldn’t return until morning.”

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility as of the time of this report.

Local security operatives were reportedly overwhelmed by the scale of the assault, with residents accusing authorities of a slow response to the growing insecurity in the area.

The Imo State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the incident. However, security reinforcements have reportedly been deployed to restore order and prevent further attacks.

The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents in parts of the South East region, where rising insecurity linked to armed groups and criminal gangs continues to threaten lives and livelihoods.
