The widow of late Nollywood comic actor, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, has appealed to Nigerians for support, revealing that she and her children are facing severe financial difficulties more than two years after the actor’s death.
The appeal was made during an emotional interview with content creator King Mitchy, in which the late actor’s wife and children opened up about their struggles to meet basic living expenses, including rent, school fees and utility bills.
Speaking in the video, Mrs Okafor disclosed that the family has been living without electricity for approximately two months after their power supply was disconnected due to unpaid bills.
According to her, the situation has become so challenging that the family now relies on water from a well and must seek alternative locations to charge their mobile phones.
“We fetch water from the well because I have not paid the house rent. They have even cut off our electricity for two months now. We have been living like that. Every night, we go looking for where to charge our phones. It has not been easy,” she said.
The widow described the burden of caring for the family alone since the actor’s passing, noting that financial constraints have continued to worsen despite efforts to keep the household afloat.
One of the couple’s daughters commended her mother for her resilience and sacrifices in ensuring the family survives under difficult circumstances.
“I want to thank God for my mom. She tries everything she can to feed us, pay our school fees and make us happy,” she said.
Mrs Okafor further revealed that the family’s financial troubles have begun to affect her children’s education, disclosing that some of them may no longer be able to attend school due to outstanding fees.
“Right now, they can’t go to school again. I can even show you the message the school sent me today,” she lamented.
The interview has since sparked reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing sympathy for the family and calling for support to help them overcome their challenges.
King Mitchy, who conducted the interview, stated that efforts were being made to raise assistance for the family, particularly to help settle outstanding school fees, pay house rent and reconnect electricity to their residence.
Mr Ibu, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most celebrated comic actors, passed away on March 2, 2024, at the age of 62 after battling health complications.
