Musk Spends $276m to Boost Republicans Ahead of US Midterm Elections

Billionaire businessman Elon Musk has donated at least $276 million to Republican-aligned political groups since July to help the party retain control of the United States Congress in the November 3 midterm elections.

The donations, reported by US media on Monday, October 12, make Musk the largest publicly known political donor in the 2026 midterm election cycle.

According to reports, Musk has spent approximately $366 million on federal political committees since the current election cycle began in January 2025.

The latest donations are intended to strengthen Republican candidates’ campaigns as the party faces the possibility of losing its majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The largest share of the funding, $158 million, went to the Senate Leadership Fund, a political action committee supporting Republican Senate candidates.

Musk also donated $76 million to America PAC, his own political action committee, which is conducting voter mobilisation activities to increase Republican turnout.

Other beneficiaries include the Congressional Leadership Fund, which received $20 million; the Lone Star Liberty PAC, which received $10 million to support Republican Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton; and the Republican Governors Association, which received $10 million.

The Republican Attorneys General Association received an additional $2 million.

Musk Returns to Political Spending

Musk’s latest contributions represent a significant return to large-scale political spending after he indicated in May 2025 that he intended to reduce his involvement in election financing.

During the 2024 election cycle, the billionaire spent approximately $290 million supporting President Donald Trump’s successful re-election campaign and other Republican candidates.

His political influence expanded following Trump’s return to the White House, with Musk briefly serving in the administration and overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency, an initiative established to reduce federal spending.

However, the relationship between the two men deteriorated following disagreements over government policy and spending legislation.

They have since reconciled and appeared together at several public events.

Trump also presented Musk with the National Medal of Science at an event in Washington last week.

Election Spending and Republican Prospects

Musk’s financial support comes at a critical period for Republicans as they seek to maintain control of Congress ahead of the November 3 elections.

The party faces challenges arising from voter dissatisfaction over inflation, the administration’s performance and the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

America PAC has deployed canvassers across several battleground states and is supporting Republican candidates in competitive congressional races.

The organisation’s activities include door-to-door voter outreach, advertising, direct mail and other mobilisation efforts aimed at encouraging conservative voters to participate in the elections.

The donations also give Republican-aligned groups additional resources to compete in an increasingly expensive campaign season.

Musk’s representatives confirmed the contributions, which were initially reported by The New York Times ahead of the federal campaign finance disclosure deadline.

Although individual contributions directly to candidates are subject to federal limits, political action committees can receive and spend much larger sums independently to support political campaigns.

Musk’s latest spending underscores the growing influence of wealthy individuals and outside political organisations in financing American elections.
