National Crisis and Leadership Failures Have Disorganized Labour Party – Ibeneme

The Former spokesperson for the Labour Party during 2023 general elections in Enugu State, Dr Mc Ginger Ibeneme says the state chapter of the party mismanaged its electoral successes, leading to its failure as the opposition.

Dr. Ibeneme made this known on Saturday during the Freedom Square radio programme held on Solid 100.9 FM, Enugu.

He stated that the party’s state leaders failed to provide the needed leadership for its members, which resulted in their colossal failure to secure the necessary majority at the State House of Assembly. He added that this also triggered the defection of some members to the PDP.

According to him, “What happened with the Labour Party in Enugu State is something we didn’t expect. I can say that we had amassed an unexpected victory, which overwhelmed us. The leadership failure started when our people began to lose their victories at the tribunal, all because there was no support from the state leaders. They were also not given the proper information and instructions to follow during the election of the State Assembly leadership, which made them lose trust. They lost confidence in the party and, thus, decided to seek safety and greener pastures.”

He further explained that had the state leadership provided strategic guidance and built a solid internal structure, the party would have sustained its momentum and strengthened its position as a formidable opposition. Instead, internal wrangling, lack of coordination, and failure to harness the goodwill of the electorate resulted in a disappointing decline.

Dr. Ibeneme also stated that the crisis rocking the party at the national level was due to its inability to provide the leadership needed to drive progress.

He went further to say that the refusal of the national leadership to align with Peter Obi, who was the bedrock of their success, was the factor that ultimately shattered the party’s stability.

“They would have become members of the Board of Trustees and managed the party, but due to selfishness, they wanted tenure elongation, which has disorganized the party. The greed and inordinate ambition of a few individuals have overshadowed the collective interest, plunging the party into avoidable chaos.”

Dr. Ibeneme lamented that instead of focusing on strengthening party structures and maintaining internal unity, certain individuals prioritized personal political ambitions over the party’s survival. He noted that their actions alienated loyal members, weakened grassroots support, and created a leadership vacuum that has left the party struggling to remain relevant.

He called for urgent reforms within the party, urging stakeholders to put aside personal interests and rebuild trust among members. According to him, only a united and purpose-driven leadership can restore the Labour Party’s credibility and position it as a formidable force ahead of future elections.
