NUJ Gives Kudos to Enugu State Govt on ongoing infrastructural projects, as It demands for a improved review workers’ salaries

 

 

The NUJ Press Centre, Enugu, hosted its monthly congress on Thursday, February 29, 2024, presided over by Chairman Comrade Sam Udekwe. Following deliberations on various pressing issues affecting the Council and the state at large, a communique was therefore issued detailing key resolutions.

 

Among the resolutions reached, the Congress commended the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Enugu State Council for its proactive approach in providing financial assistance to members facing challenges. Additionally, an appeal was made to the Enugu State government to ensure the prompt payment of pensions and gratuities to retired state workers to meet their financial needs in other to have a better life.

 

Acknowledging the State government’s efforts in ongoing infrastructural projects, the Congress urged contractors to expedite project completion before the onset of the rainy season. Concerns were also raised over the escalating traffic gridlock and the proliferation of illegal motor parks in the metropolis, prompting a call for urgent intervention by relevant authorities.

 

Furthermore, the Congress emphasized the importance of considering residents’ welfare during demolition exercises to prevent resource wastage and urged the State government to review workers’ salaries in line with the expected national minimum wage.

 

Other resolutions included calls for enhanced security measures in the metropolis, recognition of journalists for their advocacy role, and advocacy for the establishment of the Disabilities Commission as mandated by the recently passed Disabilities Law in Enugu State.

 

Reporting on behalf of the NUJ Enugu State Council, Secretary Dame Ifeoma Amuta highlighted these key resolutions, underscoring the Council’s commitment to addressing pertinent issues affecting its members and the community at large.
