Obi to Give Convocation Lecture as Atiku’s American University Marks 20 Years

The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is set to deliver the convocation lecture at the American University of Nigeria (AUN) in Yola on Saturday, marking the institution’s 20th anniversary. This announcement was made by Ibrahim Umar, spokesperson for Peter Obi Media Reach, in a statement released in Abuja.

According to Umar, Obi’s keynote address at AUN’s 16th Founder’s Day aligns with his history of speaking at prestigious educational institutions worldwide, such as Harvard and Yale universities. The event will also honor the university’s founder, former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, for his significant contributions to education and human development.

The convocation lecture is the centerpiece of activities celebrating two decades of AUN’s commitment to fostering an American-style education model tailored to addressing Africa’s socio-economic challenges. Over the past 20 years, the university has distinguished itself through community service initiatives, research projects, and outreach programs, earning a place among the top three Nigerian universities in the 2024 Times Higher Education global impact ranking.

Established in 2003, AUN has significantly broadened its academic offerings and partnerships with international institutions. It also serves as the host for the American Window in Nigeria’s northeast, providing students and the public with access to information on U.S. scholarships and research opportunities.

AUN President, Prof. DeWayne Frazier, expressed his enthusiasm for Obi’s participation, emphasizing the former Anambra State Governor’s dedication to education and public service. “Mr. Obi’s leadership and advocacy for quality education make him an ideal speaker for this milestone celebration,” Frazier stated.

By delivering the lecture, Obi joins a prestigious list of past speakers, including notable figures like Dr. Paul Vita, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, Bishop Matthew Kukah, former Ugandan Vice President Dr. Gilbert Bukenya, and Prof. Charles Soludo.
