The Oyo State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has suspended its indefinite strike action following a review of the security situation in the state and consultations with the Oyo State Government and other stakeholders.
The decision was announced on Wednesday in a statement jointly signed by the State Chairman of the union, Hassan Fatai, and the State Secretary, Olukayode Salami.
According to the union, the suspension of the industrial action followed appeals from the state government and other critical stakeholders, as well as an assessment of the prevailing security situation, which prompted the leadership to direct teachers to return to their duty posts.
The strike was initially declared over growing concerns about the safety of teachers and pupils following the abduction of schoolchildren in Ogbomosho, located in Orire Local Government Area of the state.
The union had insisted that improved security measures were necessary to guarantee the safety of learners and education workers before academic activities could continue across public schools.
With the suspension of the strike, teachers are expected to resume classroom activities immediately, bringing an end to the disruption of academic work in public primary and secondary schools across the state.
The NUT expressed appreciation to the Oyo State Government and other stakeholders for their interventions, noting that the decision to suspend the strike was taken in the interest of students and the education sector while efforts to strengthen security around schools continue.
The union had earlier maintained that the protection of pupils, students and teachers remained its primary concern, following the recent security incident that heightened fears over the safety of schools in the state.
