Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, Starlink, has announced a sharp increase in subscription rates for its Nigerian customers. The monthly cost for the Standard (Residential) package will rise from ₦38,000 to ₦75,000, nearly doubling its previous price. The company communicated this update through a customer notice, citing the need to enhance its infrastructure and maintain a reliable, high-quality service across Nigeria as the reason for the hike.
The new pricing takes effect immediately for new subscribers, while existing customers will begin paying the increased rates starting January 27, 2025. Other Starlink packages have also seen significant increases, with the Mobile Regional (Roam Unlimited) plan now priced at ₦167,000 and the Mobile Global (Global Roam) package at ₦717,000.
This price adjustment follows a recent directive from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which industry analysts believe may have influenced the decision. The development is expected to ripple through the telecom sector, with major providers like MTN, Glo, and Airtel anticipated to raise their internet service tariffs as well.
The news has sparked mixed reactions on social media. Many customers have expressed frustration over the sharp increase, while others are cautiously optimistic, hoping the higher costs will translate to improved service quality. Starlink has encouraged customers to utilize its digital platforms for subscription renewals and inquiries.
As Nigerians adjust to these changes, experts are closely observing the broader implications for internet accessibility and affordability in the country, especially amid rising costs across the telecommunications industry.
