Why Nigerians call us “rubber stamp” – Senate President Ahmad Lawan

Nigerian Senate President Ahmad Lawan addressed the perception of the National Assembly as a “rubber stamp” legislature.
In his declaration during the induction of the first batch of new representatives on Tuesday in Abuja, acknowledging the criticism.

Lawan emphasized the negative impact of ongoing disagreements with the executive on legislative activities. He stressed the importance of a good working relationship between the two branches of government, highlighting the need for effective and efficient service delivery to the people.

Under Lawan’s leadership, the Ninth Senate adopted a friendly yet professional approach to executive-legislative relations. This approach aimed to foster a harmonious working relationship based on mutual respect, consultation, cooperation, collaboration, and partnership.

However, this approach has been misunderstood, leading to the misperception that the Ninth National Assembly is merely a “rubber stamp” assembly. Lawan clarified that their intention was to create a conducive environment for national development, ensuring a safe atmosphere for Nigeria’s progress.

Lawan highlighted the achievements of the Ninth Senate, emphasizing the quantity and quality of measures that were submitted, passed, and signed. The Senate has been actively fulfilling its legislative responsibilities while maintaining a cooperative stance towards the executive.

In a related development, House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila congratulated the lawmakers-elect of the 10th National Assembly and urged them to engage in discussions that are beyond reproach.

Gbajabiamila called on the members to justify their positions through the excellence of their efforts in their respective roles. He emphasized the importance of producing high-quality legislation, providing exemplary constituency services, conducting thorough oversight activities, and engaging in substantive and impactful discourse within the chamber.

Both Lawan and Gbajabiamila underscored the significance of a strong and effective legislature in advancing the interests of the Nigerian people. They recognized the need for collaboration and constructive engagement with the executive branch to achieve positive outcomes for the nation. By striving for excellence and maintaining a high standard of conduct, they aimed to dispel the notion of a “rubber stamp” legislature and reinforce the commitment to serve the country diligently.
