The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has voiced strong confidence that the long-running political turmoil in Rivers State is close to being resolved, following what he described as a decisive new intervention by President Bola Tinubu.
Wike made the remarks on Tuesday in Abuja while addressing journalists after inspecting ongoing projects within the FCT. He highlighted President Tinubu’s role as a unifying leader, stressing that the president’s involvement was crucial in easing tensions between the executive and legislative arms of government in Rivers State.
According to him, he is hopeful that the latest effort will bring the crisis to a permanent end. “By God’s grace, this should be the final time the president will have to intervene in this matter, and the last time the people of Rivers State will witness such disagreements,” Wike said.
He further underscored the weight of the president’s guidance, describing Tinubu as the nation’s father figure whose words should command respect and compliance in the interest of peace, unity, and development.
Commenting on the understanding reached and the responsibilities of both the Rivers State House of Assembly and Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Wike expressed confidence that all parties would act appropriately to sustain the peace.
“The House of Assembly will play its role as expected, and I am equally confident that the governor will also take the necessary steps to ensure lasting stability,” he stated.
Wike added that restoring calm and ensuring progress in Rivers State must now take precedence, while expressing appreciation to President Tinubu for his continued efforts in facilitating dialogue and reconciliation.
The Rivers State House of Assembly, widely regarded as loyal to Wike, had recently initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara. In a bid to resolve the political standoff, President Tinubu on Monday invited both Wike and Fubara to the Presidential Villa for talks aimed at mediating the dispute.
