United Nigeria Airlines has responded to public concerns following the circulation of a viral video showing passengers being issued handwritten boarding passes before a flight.
The video, which was shared on X by Morris Monye, generated widespread reactions online after he questioned the state of Nigeria’s aviation sector and expressed worries over operational standards.
In the post, Monye stated that he and several other passengers on an early morning United Nigeria Airlines flight received handwritten boarding tickets, describing the situation as troubling and unusual.
Reacting to the development, the airline’s spokesperson, Chibuike Uloka, explained that the incident was caused by a temporary failure of the RESA system at the airport.
According to Uloka, the downtime affected the passenger processing system used at the Lagos airport terminal operated by Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited.
He explained that RESA is responsible for key airport operations including passenger check-in, seat assignments, boarding pass generation, and other handling procedures.
Uloka stated that the system outage occurred at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 in Lagos and affected all airlines relying on the same platform, not just United Nigeria Airlines.
He added that the airline opted for manual boarding procedures in order to prevent flight delays and avoid disrupting passengers’ travel schedules while waiting for the system to be restored.
According to him, issuing handwritten boarding passes was a temporary operational measure taken to ensure passengers were transported without unnecessary delays or confusion caused by the technical failure.
