The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has taken issue with comments made by Governor Seyi Makinde regarding insecurity in the state, accusing him of misrepresenting the constitutional responsibilities of governors in matters of security.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, Olawale Sadare, the opposition party challenged Makinde’s assertion that his ability to combat insecurity is limited because security agencies are controlled by the Federal Government.
The APC described the governor’s remarks as evidence of poor leadership and argued that he should not evade responsibility for the security concerns confronting residents of the state.
According to the party, Makinde’s comments amounted to an attempt to shift blame for the growing insecurity in Oyo State rather than addressing the challenges directly.
The opposition further suggested that the governor should step aside from office and allow his deputy to complete the administration’s tenure.
It also warned voters against supporting leaders it described as lacking the capacity to effectively manage governance and development issues.
The criticism followed comments made by Makinde while accepting the presidential ticket of the Allied Peoples Movement in Ibadan, where he expressed concern over the continued captivity of kidnapped schoolchildren and other victims. The governor had argued that state governors lack full control over security agencies, limiting their ability to respond decisively to security threats—a position the APC firmly rejected.
