Sir Keir Starmer has formally resigned as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, bringing his two-year tenure to an end and paving the way for Andy Burnham to assume office as the country’s new leader.

Starmer announced his departure in a farewell address outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, declaring that his mission in government had been accomplished.

“My work is done,” he said.

Reflecting on his time in office, the outgoing prime minister expressed satisfaction with his administration’s achievements and thanked the British public for the opportunity to serve.

“I go with good grace, I go with a smile and I go proud of everything that we have achieved,” Starmer said.

He also pledged his full support to his successor, Andy Burnham, as he prepared to take over the leadership of both the Labour Party and the government.

Following his address, Starmer travelled to Buckingham Palace, where he formally tendered his resignation to King Charles III.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace confirmed the development, saying, “Sir Keir Starmer MP had an audience of The King this morning and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, which His Majesty was graciously pleased to accept.”

The Palace added that “Lady Starmer was also received by The King.”

Shortly afterwards, Burnham, who was elected Labour leader on Friday, was invited by King Charles III to form a new government, officially becoming the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister.

He is expected to deliver his inaugural address outside Downing Street before unveiling the first members of his Cabinet as he begins shaping his administration.

Among the early changes ahead of the transition, Prisons Minister Lord Timpson stepped down on Monday, clearing the way for Burnham to restructure his government.

The change in leadership marks a new chapter in British politics, with Burnham now tasked with steering the country through its next phase of governance.
