US Lawmaker Criticises Tinubu Government Over Failure to Meet Security Aid Conditions

A U.S. lawmaker, Riley Moore, has criticised the administration of Bola Tinubu, alleging that it has not fulfilled key requirements tied to American security assistance.

Moore, who represents West Virginia’s 2nd District, made his concerns public in a post on X on Wednesday, where he called on Marco Rubio to factor Nigeria’s performance into decisions regarding future funding allocations.

He stated that, in his assessment, the Tinubu-led government has not met the conditions set by the U.S. appropriations committee for receiving security aid, urging that this be taken into account when administering funding for the 2026 and 2027 fiscal years.

These fiscal years (FY26 and FY27) form part of the United States’ federal budgeting process, which determines how foreign assistance—including military and security support—is distributed to partner nations like Nigeria.

U.S. security assistance to Nigeria typically covers areas such as military training, intelligence sharing, equipment provision, and joint efforts to combat terrorism, banditry, and organised crime. However, such support is usually tied to strict conditions, including transparency in fund usage, respect for human rights, and measurable progress in addressing security challenges.

Moore’s latest comments come amid ongoing concerns about the effectiveness of U.S. support, particularly as violence and insecurity persist in several parts of Nigeria despite continued cooperation between both countries.
