Former England international Raheem Sterling has been arrested on suspicion of drug-related driving after allegedly crashing his vehicle into motorway barriers, police confirmed on Saturday.
The 31-year-old winger, who recently featured for Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie, is said to have lost control of his Lamborghini on Thursday morning, hitting barriers along the M3 motorway in Hampshire, southern England.
Hampshire Police stated that officers responded shortly before 9 a.m. after reports of a single-vehicle collision near the Minley Interchange on the southbound carriageway. No other vehicles were involved, and no injuries were recorded.
According to the police statement, the driver—identified as a 31-year-old man from Berkshire—was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, dangerous driving, possession of a Class C substance, and failing to provide a specimen. He has since been released on bail while investigations continue.
Sterling has not been charged, and he remains under investigation.
Sources close to the player told UK media that he has been under significant psychological pressure in recent years and has felt overlooked and undervalued. They also stressed that the arrest was only on suspicion and that no evidence has yet confirmed the presence of drugs in his system.
Sterling, who has 82 caps for England and scored 20 international goals, played a key role in England’s run to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the Euro 2020 final.
At club level, he began his career at Liverpool before a highly successful spell at Manchester City, where he won multiple Premier League titles, FA Cup, and League Cups. He later moved to Chelsea in 2022, spent time on loan at Arsenal during the 2024/25 season, and most recently joined Feyenoord on a short-term deal in February, making eight appearances in the Eredivisie.
