Peter Obi Vows to Serve Only One Term, Presidency Questions His Credibility

Peter Obi has declared that he would serve only one term if elected President of Nigeria, insisting that no circumstance would make him remain in office beyond four years.

Obi made the statement in a preview clip from an interview scheduled to air on News Central TV, where he discussed issues surrounding governance, the economy and the nation’s political system.

In the interview, the former Anambra State governor explained that his preference for a single term was rooted in his belief that Nigeria needed stability and focused leadership.

According to him, even under extreme pressure, he would not remain in office beyond one tenure.

During the discussion with journalist Kayode Akintemi, Obi argued that Nigeria urgently required a leader capable of creating wealth and rebuilding the economy.

He also alleged that the ruling party had compromised Independent National Electoral Commission, raising concerns about the credibility of the country’s electoral system.

The former presidential candidate further criticised the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing it of worsening Nigeria’s economic and security challenges through excessive borrowing and poor policy decisions.

Obi claimed that within two years, Nigeria had become poorer, more insecure and increasingly affected by hunger and hardship.

He criticised the government’s handling of insecurity, questioning why national leaders remained distant while deadly attacks continued in parts of the country, including Plateau, Niger and Benue states.

He also faulted the administration’s response to challenges facing farmers, arguing that food importation policies had negatively affected local agricultural production.

According to Obi, countries facing even more difficult conditions, such as war-torn Ukraine, were still able to support food production and exports, while Nigeria continued to struggle with rising food insecurity.

Reacting to Obi’s comments, Bayo Onanuga dismissed the one-term promise, saying the former governor’s political history showed that he could not be trusted.

Onanuga accused Obi of repeatedly abandoning political alliances and failing to remain loyal to parties he previously pledged commitment to.

The presidential aide recalled that Obi once vowed to remain faithful to All Progressives Grand Alliance while serving as governor of Anambra State but later defected to the Peoples Democratic Party.

According to Onanuga, Obi’s movement across different political parties over the years undermined the credibility of his current promises.

He maintained that the former presidential candidate’s political record suggested that his commitments were often temporary and unreliable.
